Thursday, August 16th’s edition of the Chicago Reader has a special treat within its pages: MC Tree G!!! Writer Leor Galil sat down with the Gutter City Ent. & Project Mayhem Music rapper/producer to discuss how his upbringing and past experiences helped to form the classic mixtape Sunday School and his personally coined #SoulTrap sound. This article is great because it gives the reader not only a look into life of Tree the “artist”, but also Tremaine the “person”. Read the full article by clicking the jump below…
Recently the good folks over at IXHIPHOP.com sat down with Paypa, Ish, and Lennon of Project Mayhem to talk about their sound, their music tastes & influences, and the Chicago hip hop scene as a whole. Check out the full write-up after the jump below…
Gutter City/Project Mayhem Music‘s Tree was just crowned as one of SPIN Magazine’s 5 Best Artists For August ’12. If you haven’t noticed, Tree has been grinding hard and it’s great to see that hard work rewarded by all of the accolades he’s been receiving. If you haven’t already, download Tree‘s recently released project with producer Tony Baines, “The Lit“, and be on the lookout later this month for Tree‘s next project, “Trillin‘”, with producer 110% Pure. Told ya he was grinding…….
Who: Rapper/producer from Chicago, subtle in every way that the city’s burgeoning “drill scene” is in your face, whose beats are delicate sample-based things that take seemingly played-out breaks and flip them in ways that will leave your head spinning, instead of nodding (the usual low-stakes goal of soul beat maestros). Tree’s raps are choked out and often crooned, in a voice that invokes Tom Waits as much any fellow MC.
File Next To: Freeway, J. Dilla, Scarface
Where to Start: The drunk trumpet moan of “50′s” off Sunday School, out now for free download, and the recent The LIT (E.P.) with producer Tony Baines, also available for free.

Mayhem Music artist Tree‘s Collab with up-comer Young Giftz, “Nino“, is featured in Fakeshoredrive.com‘s “FSD’s Favorite Chicago Songs of 2012 (So Far)“. Read the write-up & peep the Heart of the City directed video for the Tree Produced “Nino” below…
Excerpt from Fakeshoredrive.com:
2012 has been a breakout year for Tree, but newcomer Giftz has also seen his profile rise significantly this calendar. So its only right they celebrate their new-found notoriety by teaming up to craft an ode inspired by the king of the Carter.
Tree’s beat is so heavenly, you almost forget they’re likening themselves to a crime lord here. Giftz rides the track in a calm, cool and collected manner; dropping calculated punchlines and clever couplets throughout, while Tree’s contrasting voice is literally cracking over the track. This hasn’t left rotation since it leaked in the spring, and not since Ice-T has someone made a song this dope about Nino Brown — and that was 20 years ago.
Mayhem Music is honored as Tree‘s Sunday School mixtape is ranked in MTV’s top 5 mixtapes of 2012 so far, along with the likes of superstars such as Rick Ross & Future. Click the link below for the full article as covered by mtvhive.com.
There is no negro problem. The problem is whether the American people have loyalty enough, honor enough, patriotism enough, to live up to their own constitution…
